Tips for Stirring Natural Peanut Butter

Do you dread stirring your natural peanut butter? Do you wait until you really need to in order to stir it up? Do you love eating organic peanut butter, but hate stirring it because the butter knife is too small, or the spatula doesn’t have enough strength to do so?

So, what is the best way to stir natural peanut butter? As someone who owned a bake shop for over ten years, I can tell you we went through a shit load of peanut butter! So, I am going to share my Tips for Stirring Natural Peanut Butter today. And I am going to share with you the best tool for stirring natural peanut butter.

Don’t Bulk Stock

Natural peanut butter is easier to stir the fresher it is. So, while you may like to stock up at Costco or just in general, skip stocking up on natural peanut butter. Just buy this when you need it, because the fresher it is, the easier it is to stir.

Store It Upside Down

You can store natural peanut butter upside down, and the oil will start to sink to the top. Turn it right side up a couple days before you plan to stir it, and it will make it a lot easier.

Use a Straight Spatula

What is the best way to stir natural peanut butter? Use a straight spatula! I call this a cake scraper, as it’s used to frost cakes. But, this straight spatula is the best tool for stirring natural peanut butter! This is large, so it is tall enough that it sticks out of the jar a good amount for you to grip. It is also metal, and those sides can dig into that solid peanut butter and mix it up well. It is thin and sharp so it can get around the edges and break up that solid peanut butter that is sticking there. This is hands down the best tool for stirring natural peanut butter!

The trick to stirring it with this straight spatula is first, break it up in the middle. Stick the spatula straight into the middle block and break that shit up! This tool is meal, so it works very well to break up the hard peanut butter.

Second, you want to twist and turn it in the middle of the jar. This allows the oil to sink into the middle so it doesn’t spill out of the sides (I hate when that happens!). Once you have the oil contained, then you can go around the sides of the jar with this straight spatula.

Because, this straight spatula is so thin, sturdy, and strong, it can easily be used to scrape the edges of the jar where solid peanut butter may stick. Also, because it is so long, you can actually grip it so you can break up the peanut butter that is stuck on the bottom. This tool really helps you stir the entire jar, so you don’t end up with that hard dry clump in the bottom!

Use a Hand Mixer or Stand Mixer

If you don’t want to stir it yourself, you can dump it all into a bowl and use a hand mixer. Or you can dump it into your stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Both of these ways will stir natural peanut butter well. However, then you have to transfer it back into the jar (or into something else). So, this is why I don’t usually use this method, even though it does work very well.

Do you need to refrigerate natural peanut butter?

No, but it will last longer if you do. I do not like peanut butter out of the fridge, so I never refrigerate mind. Natural peanut butter will last for about one month out of fridge, or it will last longer if you keep it in the fridge.

How do you know if natural peanut butter is bad?

Natural peanut butter that has gone bad will smell rancid. You may also notice that it is much drier or darker than usual. But the main thing will be the smell. It won’t hurt you if you eat bad peanut butter, but it will taste bad, so you’ll know!

Is natural peanut butter better for you?

Yes, duh! Natural peanut butter is better for you because it doesn’t contain any preservatives or additives. This is also what makes it separate, because it does not have those preservatives and additives! It’s even better for you if you buy organic natural peanut butter.

What is the best organic peanut butter?

My favorite peanut butter is the Costco Kirkland Organic Peanut Butter, it only has two ingredients: organic dry roasted peanuts and sea salt. My second favorite is Smucker’s Organic Creamy Peanut Butter. And, if I had to guess – I would guess that Costco’s peanut butter is Smucker’s.

Now, I don’t know that for sure. But, many years ago there was a peanut shortage (not sure if you remember this). But Costco was out of all their organic peanut butter. And I owned a bake shop at the time, and I tried every single other brand of organic peanut butter I could find, and they all sucked – except Smucker’s. They all didn’t have enough flavor (in my opinion) and they made my cookies lackluster.

And one of our best seller’s was the Best Friend Ever (peanut butter cookie with pretzels, chocolate chips, and sea salt) find the recipe in my book Cookies for Everyone. But, I tried every single peanut butter with that cookie recipe, and Smucker’s was the only one that held up. So, maybe I’m wrong, but maybe I’m not. Either way – I will gladly eat Costco Organic Peanut Butter or Smucker’s Organic Peanut Butter.

Why go organic?

You may be wondering why I push organic ingredients for everything, even savory and healthy dishes. Organic ingredients go beyond just health and wellness, and contribute so much to the taste and flavor of a recipe. So, if you think that you’re making something healthy and buying fruits, veggies, or meats so maybe you don’t need to spend the extra to go organic here – let me sway your thinking.

Organic ingredients are made in a more pure way, therefore using no additives, no GMOs, and minimal ingredients. This really allows the true ingredients to shine – and because of that their flavor shines through. Therefore, organic ingredients are more flavorful than their non organic counterparts. So, just because it’s already a healthy recipe, or you’re already buying good for you ingredients – it doesn’t mean you can skip organic! Trust me here, and make the switch. Your body and your taste buds will thank you!

So, I highly recommend that you buy the best organic ingredients for this recipe! You can also shop my Amazon Storefront for all my favorite organic ingredients here. Tip – hover over each ingredient to see the name. And if you want to learn more about organic foods and the difference, read my post here on Food Labels and What They Mean.
