Did you know that you can make your own buttermilk? With just two simple ingredients (that I’m sure you have at home already) you can have homemade buttermilk in a matter of minutes.
What is buttermilk? It’s a fermented dairy drink. It is also acidic which can react with baking soda in certain recipes. It can also be used to retain moisture and tenderize chicken and pork (one of the reasons I was trying to get some). See, I just got an air fryer, and Delaney and I have been talking about making our own chicken strips, onion rings, donuts, and a slew of other things. One of the ingredients in a lot of these recipes is buttermilk.
Buttermilk is something that is more specialty and can be harder to find at the grocery store. Organic Valley makes an organic version, however, none of the grocery stores in town carry it! So, I was left with making my own. Not only is it used for air frying recipes, but it can also be used in pancakes, waffles, biscuits, cakes, and more!
So today I’m sharing a really easy recipe for Homemade Buttermilk so you never have to worry about finding it or buying it. All you need is organic whole milk and lemons. Get the recipe below.
Makes 1 cup
1 cup organic whole milk
1 tablespoon organic fresh lemon juice
Add the milk and lemon juice together and stir. Allow to sit for a few minutes while the milk curdles.
Store in the fridge for up to 7 days.
