If part of your resolutions include using organic products for your health and the environment then you will love this DIY Organic Air Freshener. This easy homemade air freshener uses just 3 simple ingredients: vanilla extract, essential oil, and water.

I am highly sensitive to smells. I get bad headaches, anxiety, and can feel claustrophobic even when there’s foreign smells around. It was something Self Magazine put out an article recently that many people actually feel this way. So, it made me feel good to know I’m not the only one!
So, needless to say, I’m not a fan of air fresheners! Air fresheners have chemicals and synthetic fragrances in them. These chemicals can last for days or more, even after the smell has gone away.
But, if you like to use air fresheners and you want to start using a clean organic air freshener, then you should try my DIY Organic Air Freshener!
This easy homemade air freshener can be made with any scent you like. I’m using lemon in this recipe, as lemon is a scent I really like. Plus, lemon can also boost your mood and ease anxiety, two things that are positives!
Things You’ll Need to Make DIY Organic Air Freshener
Pyrex Measuring Cup (or any kind of pitcher with a spout)
Organic Vanilla Extract (or any kind of alcohol) I use vanilla extract as it provides a vanilla scent as well and I always have it in my pantry! The alcohol allows the essential oil to blend in well, if you just use water, the oil will sit on top of the water and not mix in.
Organic Lemon Essential Oil (or any essential oil of your choice)
How to Make This Easy Homemade Air Freshener
First, you’ll need an empty spray bottle. Then grab a Pryex measure cup, or some kind of pitcher with a spout.
Add in the vanilla extract and lemo oil and mix together. Then, add in the water.
Pour the mixture into your spray bottle and use!

Other scents you could make this easy homemade air freshener with include:
Peppermint
Peppermint can help sooth by reducing anxiety too.
Lavender
Lavender is known to help ease and calm, reduce anxiety, lift mood, and even lower blood pressure.
Rose
Rose can relive stress, anxiety and promotes relaxation.
Grapefruit
Grapefruit can help balance mood and relieve stress.
Orange
Orange has a natural calming effect and it will help lift your mood.
Rosemary
Rosemary can help fight cold and flus when inhaled, so it makes a great air freshener in addition to helping promote staying healthy during cold and flu season.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon essential oil will help promote relaxation and boost mood. Plus, adding it with vanilla will make your house smell like Snickerdoodles!
Make this easy DIY Organic Air Freshener and use it instead of store bought ones that contain
Ingredients
2 tablespoons organic vanilla extract (or alcohol)
20 drops organic lemon essential oil (or your favorite scent)
2 cups water
Directions
- In glass pitcher with a spout, add the vanilla extract (or alcohol) and essential oil. Mix together. Add the water.
- Pour into a spray bottle. You can double or triple this recipe if your spray bottle is very large!

- You can add in more essential oil if you want a stronger scent.
- You can mix essential oils for combination scents like orange and lemon, or lemon and rosemary!
