You will love this simple and crazy delicious recipe for hot dogs! I love hot dogs because they are nostalgic and take me back to being a kid. But, I like putting adult toppings on them, and this Caramelized Onion & Bacon Hot Dog recipe does not disappoint!
I start with sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms with a little olive oil and garlic as a hot dog topping, then I add chopped bacon – because everyone knows bacon makes everything better. I love that this recipe for Caramelized Onion & Bacon Hot Dogs is good enough to eat with no condiments (shocking, but true!). But, you can also add the classic ketchup or mustard, but I actually really love this with coconut aminos (or soy sauce!). Give it a try, I bet you will love it!
How to Make Caramelized Onion & Bacon Hot Dogs
First step is to cook the bacon. I like to do this in my air fryer at 400°F. But you can also do this in your oven or in a skillet as well, up to you! Once the bacon is cooked, chop it into bite sized pieces. Set aside.
Next chop your veggies into thin slices.
Add olive oil and garlic into a large skillet over medium/high heat. Add the veggies and sauté until the onions are translucent and veggies are cooked.
Cook the hot dogs. You can do this by boiling them over the stovetop, in your air fryer, or even on the grill! All ways are delicious.
Lightly toast your hot dog buns (optional). Add hot dogs, veggies, and bacon to the bun. Top with condiments if you want (but not needed!).

Caramelized Onion & Bacon Hot DogsDifficulty: Easy
Try this delicious sweet and salty hot dog topping! Caramelized onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon top these organic grassfed beef hot dogs!
1 package Organic Prairie Pork Bacon
1/2 organic yellow onion
5 organic mini sweet bell peppers
4 ounces organic Baby Bella mushrooms
1 1/2 tablespoons organic extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon organic minced garlic
1 package Organic Prairie Hot Dogs
6 organic hot dog buns
- Cook bacon to your liking and chop into small pieces. Set aside.
- Slice the onion thin. Slice the peppers into strips. Cut mushrooms in half and then into thin slices.
- In a large skillet, add the olive oil and garlic. Put over medium/high heat. Add the veggies and sauté until onions are translucent and veggies are cooked. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Cook hot dogs any way you like (boil, air fry, or grill)!
- Lightly toast hot dog buns. Add hot dog, and top with veggie mix. Top with bacon pieces.
- Add mustard, ketchup, or soy sauce!
