So, you all have probably seen my new puppy if you follow me on Instagram! If you’ve followed me for a while then you know I lost Otto last fall, and he was the absolute love of my life. He was my best friend and true soul mate. He had an amazing long life of 14 1/2 years, and he went on his own in my arms. I couldn’t have been luckier and I’m so thankful for our time together and for him.
But, I am a dog person, so I knew I would get another dog. And we just got an Apricot Pug (in Otto’s honor) and we named him John John Sushi Council. I kind of wanted to name him Muffin, as that was one of Otto’s main nicknames, but Delaney couldn’t imagine naming him that as he was insistent that we would call him that no matter what, haha! Delaney also really wanted a human name, which I also love for dogs, I think they are so great. Obviously, as Otto is a human name.

We kept going back and forth and back and forth on names. I even had some polls on my Instagram page for you guys to play along! Ultimately, we decided that he was just a John John and we also really loved Sushi, so we decided he would have a full name of John John Sushi Council. Plus, then I could say that he was so cute we named him twice! Plus, we don’t know a single dog ever named John John or even any person, besides John John Florence, obviously. But, we don’t know him personally, so it worked out great!
We knew we were going to be getting a Pug, because Otto was just so special that he made us fall in love with Pugs. And when we were thinking of names, we were thinking of food names. It was either full human name, or food name – and both ended up winning!

So, I was searching for the best food names for dogs for a long time (basically since last fall after Otto passed when I found the breeder). So much so, that I compiled my own list and I thought I would share them with you. I was getting these names from everywhere – internet searches, Instagram dogs I follow, friends dogs, neighbors dogs, and even just thinking of my favorite foods that would be sweet dog names. And you guys even threw out some that were on here!
So if you are thinking of naming your new puppy after food, you will find over 150 of the best food names for dogs right here! I have food names for boy dogs, girl dogs, and ones that could literally be used for either – like Mochi (which was a close runner up for us). Getting a puppy is such an amazing thing, you are signing up for a life long friend and companion. And naming them is something that can be challenging but also incredibly fun!
I’ve separated out the list into food categories, incase you feel that your dog must be named a dessert, a brunch item, or a drink! I hope you enjoy this list of the best food names for dogs. I also put in some possible nicknames next to the name to give you some inspiration or to tell you where I got the name incase you don’t know that food. And if you have a new puppy with a food name – reach out to me on Instagram as I’d love to see photos and hear what you chose!
